CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT
Wednesday 14th May 2025.
Buckland Athletic FC are delighted to announce Matt Cusack as our new First Team Manager.
The experienced leader, who arrives at The VX3 Stadium – Homers Heath following his departure from Helston Athletic at the close of last season, brings a decade of managerial knowledge with him, filled with success.
Cusack led Athletic to achieving Southern League Division One status, as Champions of the Western League for the first time in their history in 2023/24. He collected further silverware that season achieving Western League Manager of the Year. These titles were added to further successes at Kellaway Park, when his debut 2022/23 season ended with double-cup success through winning the Cornish Senior Cup as well as Les Phillips Cup.
Prior to his 3-year role at Helston, the accolades continue, as he assisted Plymouth Parkway to the Southern League Division One Championship in 2021/22.
Throgmorton Cup and Champions Bowl winners medals also feature within his impressive resume, making it an obvious decision to bring him to our club. Our desire to progress in the non-league pyramid is no hidden secret.
Cusack is also able to demonstrate his depth in knowledge of the game, having earned his UEFA B Coaching award and ability to deliver high-performing coaching through his Masters Degree in High Performance Coaching.
When asked, ‘why Buckland Athletic Football Club?’ Matt had the following to say:
“I have been an admirer of Buckland Athletic for a long time, and the fantastic set up at The VX3 Stadium – Homers Heath is an immediate attraction.”
“After speaking with the Co-Chairman, John Piller, it became clear that this club is a really exciting project, and the club’s vision and values align with my own.”
“The ambition is to get to the Southern League. It’s now my job, with my team around me, to do everything we can to make that happen. Our work has already begun and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone.”
“I would also like to pay tribute to Dan Hart and Todd Hanrahan who have given us a solid foundation to work from.”
Buckland Athletic FC are thrilled with the appointment of Matt and are thoroughly looking forward to welcoming him into the club.
Co-Chairman, John Piller, has expressed his excitement for the positive direction he feels Matt will be able to take the club in the future.
“After meeting Matt for the first time, I knew he’d be a superb fit for the club.”
“He’s a proven winner, at our level and above; achieving success at Saltash United, Plymouth Parkway and most recently, Helston Athletic. He has an exceptional track record and I cannot wait until he is able to add our name to that list.”
“He’s a thorough communicator, very well respected within the local football circle and embraces the long-term vision we have here at Buckland.”
“Matt is an advocate of developing talent right the way through from Youth to Senior football, evidenced by the number of young players he nurtured during his reign at Helston; which aligns to player pathway ambitions of our own.”
“I, on behalf of the Board of Directors, look forward to working closely with Matt over the summer-break, before we then move full steam ahead into the new season.”
Further announcements on Cusack’s management team are expected to follow in due course.
